Pacific Flyway Company was started by Rich Bunton. Rich was raised in Illinois and did a lot of pheasant hunting and shooting in trap leagues growing up.
It was not until Rich moved to San Jose, California did he take up duck hunting. Living in San Jose was a couple hours drive to either the Sacramento Valley or the San Joaquin Valley for some of the best waterfowl hunting in the country.
Rich met a girl, who also came from a hunting family, and soon married.
Rich's new bride, Margie, had most of her family move up to Sacramento from the Bay Area. Margie wanted to move to Sacramento real bad to be close to her family. Rich can be a little stubborn at times and did not want to go, after all Sacramento was the boonies compared to San Jose. It wasn't long before Rich's new little bride had convinced him to move.
Soon after moving to Sacramento, did Rich's passion for hunting really kick into high gear. Duck hunting three months out of the year and spring turkey hunting for six weeks. The rest of the year was spent looking for more hunting spots and helping on committees' for organizations like the NWTF, DU, and the California Waterfowl Association.
Fast forward a few years and Rich is in Colorado hunting for the Merriam turkey. While at the hunting lodge Rich picked up a book by Earl Mickel and was inspired to start making calls.
Rich returned to Sacramento and quickly traded a new shotgun for a wood lathe, thinking this call making thing was going to be easy. Any monkey can make calls……right?
Well a few thousand dollars more on tools (don't tell Margie) and a whole lot of firewood kindling with some god awful sounds coming from the garage and some strange looks from his neighbors and the two shop foremen (Max and Geno, Rich and Margie's black labs) and explaining to the authorities that no animals were harmed that some calls did come out that actually started to sound like a turkey.
Well Rich continued to work on his turkey calls until he could consistently turn out calls that he could hunt with, give to his friends, and be proud of.
The next step is obvious right? Duck and goose calls are going to be a lot easier than turkey calls; any monkey can make waterfowl calls….. Right? Well Rich spent more money for more tools (please don't tell Margie) because after all you can't use the same tools for turkey calls as you do for waterfowl calls. Rich forged ahead attempting to make waterfowl calls. After getting even stranger looks from his neighbors, Max and Geno for cussing and even worse sounds than the turkey calls, and again explaining to the authorities that there was no mad scientist was doing evil experiments on animals. Rich started to get this waterfowl call making thing down. Again, Rich started to hunt with his calls, gave them to friends, continued working and perfecting them, till they became something to be proud of. By the way it is funny how many friends a person has when there is free hunting calls to be had.
